Rick’s Bio

Rick Martin

R.D. (Rick) Martin has a vast array of career experiences: 18 years in construction; three years in the financial services sector; five years in the oil and gas sector; 2 years as a professional photographer (currently a hobbyist – Rick took the photo that appears on the back cover of Tina’s book titled “Believe in Yourself – You Are Awesome”); and most recently, a consultant to the oil and gas industry. Inter-mixed throughout the years he’s been a student of personal growth and has travelled many different paths searching. Searching for ‘what’ was never that clear – it was just a thirst to seek out new ideas; ways to learn and grow.

Rick has launched many small businesses – a couple of them failed, he broke even on a couple and ‘got ahead’ with some. Each endeavour was a lesson in how to do it better the next time. He even had to learn how go through and survive personal bankruptcy.

Rick now feels it’s time to stand up and start sharing with others his experiences so that they may find a better way. (He notes that ‘a better way’ may not mean easier. It may mean rolling the sleeves up a little higher to do the things that others wouldn’t do to succeed.) His passion is to teach awareness. “If a person has good information and resources to check and re-check before a decision is made, the better off we’ll all be.”

Workplace Health and Safety is the field that Rick is currently working in. He receives a great sense of fulfillment knowing that at the end of the day, a life may have been saved from a needless incident or at the very least, a worker goes home at the end of his/her shift with all 10 fingers and 10 toes intact. It is all about awareness – of what you are doing on the job and of those around you.

Rick’s next venture is to start a Stepfamily Awareness program. Re-marriages in Alberta alone, outnumbered new marriages in the year 2000 by almost 2 to1 and over half the re-marriages were for the third and fourth times. The old adage “keep doing it until you get it right “ doesn’t work when it comes to family and Stepfamily issues, and Rick intends to play a part in raising that awareness.

You will find Rick at most of the Best U Can B programs, sitting behind the sound table doing what he enjoys – helping out great friends deliver an amazing line-up of programs. But Rick will be stepping out on stage at Wealth Training because he strongly believes that awareness needs to be raised in the arena of ‘the money game’. Winning the money game is so hard for most people, because as children they were taught they couldn’t handle money, but the banks and insurance companies can, so that’s where they put whatever money they had. Rick’s desire is to help break this behavioural pattern so that people can win at the money game. And if they happen to have children, they in turn can teach them how to win.

Best U Can B welcomes the enthusiasm and energy that Rick brings to any event he participates in (and Tina and Neil appreciate the great job he does of providing the music for each event!).
